Gig Review – Sapphire Lane + Gimme Stitches + Shoot The Poets 2nd September @ The Central
Friday, September 3rd, 2010
If you love your Indie Rock then you definitely need to check out these bands, I came across them at The Central at a gig hosted by Monkey Mountain – who specialise in championing young raw talent in Nottingham, organising gigs and advertising.
SAPPHIRE LANE wowed the crowd with lead singer Kirsty Davis’ powerful vocals and a bassist with some amazing talent and the skinniest jeans I have EVER seen! Sapphire Lane have had a challenging couple of years since their inception in 2008, with a change of singer and even a legal dispute with an American jewelery store of the same name! But despite all that Sapphire Lane have managed to gig at a number of venues around Nottingham and gained a loyal following – keep your eyes on these guys for the future! And watch out for an EP being released soon.
GIMME STITCHES were up next with their own twist on a Blink 182 esk-sound – I loved it – and I wasnt the only one, the crowd especially loved their drummer who looked like justin bieber on a MASSIVE caffine high! Gimme Stitches were having no rest, playing song after song, drummer ‘Wino’ definitely would have felt the effect afterwards, as vocalist ‘Sicky’ was using his t-shirt to wipe his sweat off – nice!
SHOOT THE POETS closed the night with a spectacular, short but ever so sweet performance, unfortunately to a smaller crowd – seriously check these guys out they need your support, you won’t be disappointed. Shoot The Poets have also got an EP just launched out now, funded and supported by Monkey Mountain.
All these bands put on a great performance, and all deserve more recognition for their hard work – keep your eyes on these ones!

Gig Review – Way Of The Atom, Rise Again & Severn @ The Old Angel
Saturday, August 28th, 2010
The Old Angel isn’t just known for its great burgers, it’s also renowned for boasting fantastic live shows just like last night!
WAY OF THE ATOM have been out of our webpages for quite some time now so it’s great to see them back in action. When we last caught up with the band a few months ago they were playing their first few shows, but you wouldn’t think that now. Their performance showed real growth since those early days, playing their own unique blend of metal with a new found sense of purpose and urgency that made their set such a great spectacle to see– nicely done chaps!
RISE AGAIN are new to the Notts Unsigned massive and these hard rockers really impressed. Their sound translates perfectly live with their fast paced, melodic metal creating immense energetic vibes in band and crowd alike. Be sure to check them out when they next stroll into town.
SEVERN are quickly becoming metal legends around these parts and the Nottinghamshire masses turned out in force to see what all the fuss was about. There was a lot to prove for the guys last night with a new lead singer to showcase and a hype to live up to, but they certainly silenced any doubters. Their set was filled with great energy, great musical skill and great tunes. The addition of Michael Dabbs has truly given the band an extra dimension with his sensational vocal abilities and an onstage swagger that will no doubt have all the ladies in the palm of his hand very soon!
If you want to relive some of the magic of last night’s antics then why not check out Future Session 23 featuring those epic headliners SEVERN:

Gig Review – Soundhhism @ The Bodega Social
Sunday, August 22nd, 2010
Last night we all got a little bit emotional as we stood watching some of Notts Unsigned’s most exciting discoveries shine like the fantastic urban stars that they are. It’s not because it’s our musical time of the month or something, it’s because a tasty chunk of last night’s line-up came to be out of one of our Future Sessions!
SKIMAN truly is on top of the world at the moment (cough, cough) still high from his Future Sound of Nottingham performance. Accompanied by THE ELEMENTZ performing tracks off his newly released mix-tape it’s easy to see why he’s causing such a buzz around Nottingham. A set filled with passion, swagger, energy and a unique lyrical style that makes him such an original artist in this genre and our Great County.
Any line-up that can boast one awe-inspiring act after another is a gig worth remembering and this was one of those nights! HARLEIGHBLU is one of those sensational artists that has to be seen to be believed, her vocal style really is such a refreshing sound to reverberate through your eardrums. Performing an excellent set complete with a remarkable reggae version of Future Session 20 track “It’s Alright” it’s near impossible to leave tonight’s show without having your musical mind blown into beautiful note shaped pieces.
A great night, just a shame it had to end!
Well actually it doesn’t have to end at all! If you want to hear both of those fantastic artists again then why not check them out on our Trent FM Future Sessions below:

Gig Review – 8mm Orchestra and Spaceships Are Cool at the Jam Cafe
Saturday, August 21st, 2010
Jam Cafe is one of our fav NU venues, a cute little cosy cafe-bar full to the brim of people coming to watch and support local music, this time around 8mm Orchestra and Spaceships Are Cool.
8mm Orchestra continue to amaze me with their style like nothing I have heard before. Ranging from melodic gentle sounds to upbeat tracks like ‘Seven’ which just makes you forget about saving your seat from being nicked by someone and jump up and have a dance around instead. 8mm Orchestra coped well in the small venue, using all the space provided to show their skills with a range of instruments. I have to say after last night I am now an even bigger fan.
At first I thought I was seeing things when waiting for Spaceships Are Cool to set up…Who were these strange people in orange jump suits?! Had their been some sort of parachute jump gone wrong?! But in fact, these orange jump suits were the band Spaceships Are Cool. Again I have to say I was awed by this bands use of interesting instruments, synthesisers and other weird and wonderful objects. The music was relaxing, yet uplifting and fitted well with the vibe of Jam Cafe.
Over all the evening left me feeling slightly euphoric… and I especially cant complain about the bargain price to see these great bands….completely FREE…so tell me, why weren’t you there??

Gig Review – Meberob, Riot 4 Disco, Arse Full Of Chips, Liam O’Kane, Sam Wilson, A Is For Ape & Breadchasers @ The Maze
Tuesday, August 17th, 2010
Sunday’s are traditionally all about taking it easy, but when one man decides to create a day of utterly brilliant music to celebrate his birthday then rest is the last thing you were going to find down at The Mazeon Sunday!
Hats off to Will Bailey for not only showcasing some of the finest UK talent currently working their way up the punk, ska, reggae and acoustic circuits, but for always celebrating those fantastic Nottinghamshire rebels who have been ticking every box in those genres for the last few years.
MEBEROB, RIOT 4 DISCO, ARSE FULL OF CHIPS and LIAM O’KANE & THE STABLIZERS were on top form on the Acoustic Stage busting out the kind of singalongs that would make Frank Turner proud. Each artist’s songs were all laced with their own uniquely crafted blend of urban rhetoric and comedic charm that we’ve all came to know and love so well over the past few months.
The Main Stage was headed up by SAM WILSON, A IS FOR APE and BREADCHASERS who were happily taking things up a notch as their reggae, ska grooves added a few more genre spanning dimensions to the nights already stella line-up of instrumentation and sounds.
I wish I had room to go into detail about each and every Nottinghamshire band from last night’s festivities, but if I did I think we’d be here until next year! A cracking night, and an all round great celebration of what the Nottinghamshire music scene has to offer.
Thank you Nottingham, and happy birthday Comrade Bailey!
